Dear Friends,
We are very encouraged to learn that world leaders, celebrities, and people around the world show their support and expressed their concerns for Aung San Suu Kyi. We welcome world leaders’ statement expressing their concern for Aung San Suu Kyi. But they must keep on pressing on junta until Aung San Suu Kyi is free.
Releasing statements expressing concerns alone are not enough. To be freed Aung San Suu Kyi, all necessary actions must be taken. We must keep on pressing world leaders to translate their WORDS into ACTION.
We would like to request you to keep on demanding your respective governments, presidents, prime ministers, MPs, senators and congressmen to keep on pressuring Burmese junta until Aung San Suu Kyi is free.
The followings are what they said:
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown
"Regime is clearly intent on finding any pretext, no matter how tenuous, to extend her unlawful detention".
U.S. President Barack Obama
"The crisis between the United States and Burma ... has not been resolved. These actions and policies are hostile to U.S. interests. For this reason, I have determined that it is necessary to ... maintain in force the sanctions against Burma to respond to this threat."
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso
"Instead of being arrested she should have been released from house arrest, which was a clear violation of international law as determined by the United Nations"..
Democratic Senator John Kerry and Republican Senator Richard Lugar, the top Senate Foreign Relations Committee members
“Now is the time for reform-minded leaders within the military to step forward and be heard. This action (charging Aung San Suu Kyi) sends precisely the wrong message to the citizens of Burma, the people of Southeast Asia, and all those in the global community who seek for the Burmese people the opportunity to live in a country where universal human rights are respected, not trampled”
The US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
“I am deeply troubled by the Burmese Government’s decision to charge Aung San Suu Kyi for a baseless crime. We oppose the regime’s efforts to use this incident as a pretext to place further unjustified restrictions on her. We called on the Burmese authorities to release her immediately and unconditionally, along with her doctor and the more than 2,100 political prisoners currently being detained”.
‘The Elders Group’, a group consisting of World dignitaries including former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, South Africa’s Archbishop and Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tu Tu and Nelson Mandela
“Release our sister now! Absurd ‘trial’ is an excuse to extend her incarceration. We stand by Aung San Suu Kyi and call on world leaders to demand her immediate release.”
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
“Gravely concerned about the news that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been shifted to Insein Prison to face criminal charges. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an essential partner for a dialogue in Myanmar’s national reconciliation and urged on the Government not to take any further action that could undermine this important process.”
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay
"Release her immediately from her existing detention which is illegal, even under Myanmar's own laws. Myanmar authorities might claim Aung San Suu Kyi has breached the conditions of her detention, but they have broken both their own laws and their international human rights obligations”.
Indonesia
“The charges against her are not appropriate. Why should Aung San Suu Kyi be detained when it was the American national who swam across the waters to her house?”.
Singapore
Singapore’s foreign ministry said in a statement that it was “dismayed”
Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone
“Deep concern” over the new charges.
Endorsed by Not On Our Watch founders George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, signatories to the statement also include cultural icons Bono, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Nobel Laureates Professor Elie Wiesel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Senator John McCain, among others.
“We must not stand by as she is silenced once again. Now is the time for the United Nations and the entire international community to speak clearly, and with one voice: Free Aung San Suu Kyi”.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation over your unwavering support.
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Myo Thein
