UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on July 13 told the Security Council that during his recent visit to Burma, where he met Snr. Gen. Than Shwe, who has pledged to make the elections free and fair, but not granted Mr. Ban Ki-moon to meet the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Burma's ambassador to the UN, U Than Swe, defended in saying his government is processing to grant amnesty to a number of political prisoners to allow them to participate in democratic elections scheduled for 2010.
