ANTI-DICTATORSHIP, PEOPLE’S FREEDOM MOVEMENT IN BURMA

Letter of Invitation

Our 364th week show of political defiance against military rule will continue.

When the US president holds out an olive branch to the Taliban terrorists, Than Shwe sees his opportunity to get on good terms, at least with the world stalwart of democracy, which is his main nemesis since the military crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters in 1988 until today.

Today, rumors are abound that the US is contemplating a policy change on Burma citing neither sanctions nor constructive engagement is working in the country’s democracy process.

A high ranking US State Department official visited the killers’ lair at Nay Pyi Daw recently and held talks to move forward the stalled democracy process of the country. There are even hints of the US lifting sanctions against the military regime.

Seventeen US lawmakers have voiced their concern over the lifting of sanctions against the military regime without any concessions on the part of the junta.

Despite some rhetoric that sanctions are not working on the junta, the fact that persistent calls by the ruling military to lift the sanctions show no doubt that they have some ‘bite’ in denying considerable ill-gotten wealth for the thieving military men in Burma at least.

Today’s problem in Burma is not about economy or other social ills prevailing in the country. After decades of brutal rule Than Shwe led military junta in Burma is rushing to legitimize its otherwise illegal rule via the upcoming farcical 2010 elections with its handpicked parties and representatives.

The UN and US even are keeping mum over the fact that the overwhelming mandate (82%) given to the NLD and other elected representatives by the people via the 1990 elections are still standing and valid, only wanting to be honored by the military regime.

Therefore, Than Shwe’s ploy to substitute the 1990 election results with the outcome of his rigged 2010 elections is simply UNACCEPTABLE.

Equally also, talks of lifting sanctions without freeing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and holding a meaningful and all inclusive dialogue are non-acceptable and unproductive for Burma’s democracy process.

Hence, we are going to demand the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners via our weekly demonstration as follows while urging the US to cite the freedom of all political prisoners in Burma including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as conditional on lifting sanctions against the military regime.
