WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United States will send a delegation to Myanmar in the coming weeks to have a series of talks with local government officials, as well as leaders of opposition parties and organizations in the country, a senior U.S. official said here on Wednesday.

"We intend to go to Burma (Myanmar) in the next few weeks for a fact-finding mission," Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, told a hearing at the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"During our trip, we will talk to the Burmese government, representatives of the ethnic nationalities and the democratic opposition including the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi and others," Campbell said.

Campbell did not specify who will take part in the trip to Myanmar.

U.S. Senator Jim Webb, who strongly advocates the engagement of Myanmar, visited the country in August, the first of its kind in 10 years. During the visit, Webb met separately with top Myanmese leader General Than Shwe and the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
