TBF Interview with Ashin Sopaka

We have to do it by our self
TBF: On Tuesday Burma’s democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been found guilty and sentenced to 18 months under house arrest. What do you think about that?

Ashin Sopaka: I have no special feeling about the regimes decision because I already expected this since the beginning of the trial. I know that she is not guilty. The regime made this trial to put her under house arrest again. Not freeing her means that they are very afraid of her. If she would be free the people would follow her and people love her very much.

The regime could not extend the house arrest again, they would have too much pressure on them. I know this process, I know what they are doing so I have no special feeling. I always think we have to do it by our self.

We know that they are always thinking to make a problem with her. We have our own way. We want to make free our country by our self.

TBF: What kind of activity do you think should we do now?

Ashin Sopaka: We now have a lot of contacts inside and outside together. We are thinking like a football, the final match. We are planning and we are preparing for it. I can not tell you what our plans are but what we can tell you is that we are planning for the final. We need cooperation with all people around the world who love peace and justice.

TBF: On Tuesday afternoon an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council ended without conclusion because Russia and Chinia again used veto power and the U.N. could not agree to issue a statement on Burma. What do you think about that?

Ashin Sopaka: I have no interest in the United Nations any more. Think about it: Only to issue a statement that they can not agree how they can take action. Issuing a statement is only on the paper. Issuing a statement is nothing, actually.

Yesterday thousands of thousands of statements were issued. I have no idea to issue a statement because it is not an action. I feel that there is no democracy in the UN for example in UNSC if 14 members vote “Yes” but one member who vote “No” can win because of Veto power. That is totally against basic democratic principles. If the UNSC is able to practice democracy then the world will be peaceful. I want to encourage the UN to review basic democracy in the United Nations Constitution.

I don’t want to rely any more on the UN. In my head nothing remain of the UN because the United Nations is not united. Russia and China, they are one group and America, England, France and Germany another. They are divided, not united. I always say that’s why they are the Divided Nations. That’s why the world is not peaceful yet because they are playing the power game. They are not interested in peace I think. If they were really interested in peace then they would work together. I don’t see that they are united. Many people around the world know.

So that’s why, if you ask me about the United Nations I will clearly say, that I have no expectations in the United Nations, we have to do it by our selfs.
